Prefab Fireplaces
These are manufactured in a warehouse somewhere then installed on site during the new construction process. They are vented with Class A triple wall pipe that is contained within the chimney stack and extends beyond the roofline. Under regular use, it is recommended that you have them swept once a year. Sweeping a prefab fireplace is a standard, very straight forward process.
Brick and Mortar
These things can be built in one of a hundred different manners. The fireplace that came with my house was an offset brick configuration that had been trying to burn down my house! The mantle separated from the chimney and the offset stack was split from the box. This allowed smoke debris to destroy the main header on the front of the house. I tell you this by way of illustrating the unpredictable nature of these types of fireplaces. 99% of the time, cracks and separation can be repaired with the generous application of fire caulk.
